Badminton: 2021 world champ Loh into quarter-finals

Over at La Chapelle, the men’s singles 2021 world champion Loh Kean Yew has become just the second Singaporean man, and first in 20 years, to reach an Olympic singles quarter-final.

Loh needed five match points, but eventually saw off Asian Games champion Li Shifeng from People’s Republic of China 23-21, 21-15 in a remarkable tussle.

He became the first man from Singapore to reach this stage at the Olympic Games since Ronald Susilo did so at Athens 2004, and next faces defending champion Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, who had a bye in this round.

Earlier, Malaysia’s Lee Zii Jia saw off home hope Toma Junior Popov 21-13, 24-22 to set up a last-eight clash against Axelsen’s compatriot Anders Antonsen.
