Swimming: Kaylee McKeown breaks 12-year-old Olympic record to win women’s 200m backstroke
Okay, tonight’s finals are coming thick and fast in the pool as all three are scheduled at the start of the session.
Here’s the women’s 200m backstroke, with Phoebe Bacon of USA the fastest semi-finalist and Kaylee McKeown, the world record holder from Australia, next to her in lane five.
McKeown and Regan Smith in lane 7 are out to fast starts, but it’s Kylie Masse in lane 2 who turns first at 50m, nearly four-tenths under McKeown’s world record split.
Smith has moved to the front on this second length of the pool now and they are extending their lead on that world record line!
Fading a little on this third length but Smith is still in the lead as they come back. McKeown has timed this perfectly and is a little ahead now.
Can Smith find anything? Kaylee McKeown is going to win gold in a new Olympic record 2:03.73!
Regan Smith form USA in 2:04.26 takes silver, and bronze to Kylie Masse of Canada in 2:05.57.
That Olympic record had been 2:04.06 and had stood since London 2012.
