Swimming: CHN win men’s 4x100m medley relay

Time for the last two events in the pool: the medley relay finals.

First, the men’s 4x100m medley relay, in which hosts France qualified fastest. Can Léon Marchand add a fifth gold medal?

Great Britain are in lane 2, USA in 3, People’s Republic of China in 5, and Australia – perhaps surprisingly – in 7.

Backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, freestyle. That means we get to watch Adam Peaty back in action, having recovered from Covid which he suffered with last week.

Florent Manaudou gets the French home crowd pumped up with a Viking clap as the host team is introduced. "Allez les Bleus!" rings out, as it has all week, once more.

Off they go to a deafening roar with Ryan Murphy and Xu Jiayu leading the race at the 50 turn, under world record pace.

Peaty, Nic Fink, Qin Haiyang, and Marchand are now in the water. "Allez!" every time Marchand comes up for air. It’s Peaty who leads at 150.

But Marchand is dropping back slightly against the three breaststroke specialists. Qin will give Sun Jiajun the lead for the fly. Here comes Caeleb Dressel for USA. Wait, here come France!

Maxime Grousset hits the front on the back 50 of the fly and the place goes absolutely wild!

France lead going into freestyle. Here goes Manaudou. Hunter Armstrong is right behind him. And here comes Pan Zhanle for China!

France from China and USA as they make the final turn.

Pan wins it for China from USA and France!

3:27.46 the winning time, with USA in 3:28.01 and France in 3:28.38.
