Swimming: Bobby Finke breaks world record in men’s 1500m free to win gold
Finke is still ahead at 900, and he appears to have gained on Paltrinieri – if not Paltrinieri dropping back. But the U.S. swimmer has also moved slightly further ahead of the world record split.
These three men almost certainly have the medals sewn up, the question being in what order? Finke leads by over a second with 500 to go!
Wiffen is lagging behind by over three and a half seconds now. There’ll be a big effort needed if he’s to deny Finke a second straight gold medal in this race.
Finke is a full body length ahead of the world record split! Paltrinieri is still right there on the world record pace, while Wiffen looks out of it.
Still Finke from Paltrinieri at 300m to go and the Italian is not letting Finke clear! Still over 2.3 seconds under the world record split with 250 to go.
Paltrinieri is still right there with him and is closing in on Finke! What a race and both swimmers are still ahead of the split. We could be on the verge on history.
They come back and will take the bell for two lengths to go as the roar of the crowd picks up! Finke from Paltrinieri from Wiffen. It’s between Finke and the clock now as Paltrinieri fades a little.
Remember, this world record had a fast last 50. He’s 0.9 under the split at the last turn!
Can he do it?
Yes he can! Bobby Finke sets a new world record! 14:30.67 to take gold!
Gregorio Paltrinieri and Daniel Wiffen complete the podium.
