Athletics: Cole Hocker stuns field to win 1500m in Olympic record time

It’s time for the men’s 1500m final – and the battle everyone wants to see between Great Britain’s reigning world champion Josh Kerr and the reigning Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen.

But don’t count out Kenya’s Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot and USA’s Yared Nuguse either.

Ingebrigtsen and Kerr get big roars as the field is introduced. A little under four laps of the track – they’re off.

Ingebrigtsen has hit the front early and it looks like he wants to front-run this race. Kenya’s Brian Komen is there with him as Kerr slots in behind Ingebrigtsen, the Norwegian.

It’s a very fast first 400m. The last man to win this race twice in a row was the current president of World Athletics, Sebastian Coe.

Two laps to go and it’s still Ingebrigtsen at the front. The Norwegian is opening a small gap now as Cheruiyot moves up into second and Komen fades. Kerr is still just sitting in third.

They come back around to the straight and will take the bell this time. Ingebrigtsen, Cheruiyot, Kerr, Nuguse in fourth, Cole Hocker fifth with one lap to go.

Hocker is making a move on Nuguse and Kerr on Cheruiyot!

Kerr is kicking on the back straight and has closed the gap to Ingebrigtsen! Around they come the final bend and here comes Hocker too!

Kerr overtakes Ingebrigtsen on the finish straight but here come the U.S. runners!

Cole Hocker is going to stun Josh Kerr on the line!

An Olympic record 3:27.65!

Kerr takes silver in a new British national record 3:27.79 and Nuguse bronze in a new personal best 3:27.80!

Ingebrigtsen is out of the medals!
