Sailing: Eleanor Aldridge (GBR) wins first women’s kite gold

Drama! In the second race of the women’s kite final, Lauriane Nolot of France falls and ends up in the water, dropping back to fourth before the first mark.

That allows Great Britain’s Eleanor Aldridge to hit the mark in the lead, and that advantage is up to four seconds at the second mark.

Remember, a win for Aldridge will get her the gold. Also important is the race between Annelous Lammerts and Daniela Moroz, which could decide bronze.

Still Aldridge at the top mark for the second time and she is sailing away to gold! Moroz picks up a penalty and that will all but give Lammerts the bronze medal too!

Eleanor Aldridge crosses the line to win gold for Great Britain! She is the first athlete, man or woman, to win a kite event at the Olympic Games. She lets out a joyous scream, then jumps into the water in celebration.

Lauriane Nolot of France will win silver based on her two automatic wins from the opening series.

And Annelous Lammerts of Netherlands takes bronze based on her combined points from the final series.
