Athletes Battle Harsh Weather To Deliver Stellar Performances at the Golden Spike Meeting in Ostrava

At the 63rd Ostrava Golden Spike meeting in Ostrava, Czechia (more widely known as the Czech Republic), athletes faced not only fierce competition but also cold and windy conditions to deliver stellar performances.

Women’s Pole Vault

In the women’s pole vault, Great Britain’s Molly Caudery set a new meeting record and claimed the highest women’s outdoor vault of the year. The world indoor champion cleared 4.84 meters on her third attempt, surpassing the previous meeting record set in 2004. Although she missed two attempts at a potential national record of 4.92 meters, Caudery secured a comfortable victory. The 2016 Olympic champion Katerina Stefanidi finished second with a clearance of 4.64 meters, while Amálie Ĺ vábĂ­ková came third with a jump of 4.54 meters.

Men’s Pole Vault

Olympic and world champion Armand Duplantis dominated the men’s pole vault by clearing 5.62 meters and 5.82 meters on his first attempts, sealing the contest after just two jumps. He then cleared 6.00 meters on his third attempt and attempted 6.25 meters, one centimeter higher than his world record. Although he narrowly missed this height, which would have been his ninth world record, Duplantis’s performance was outstanding.

Men’s 100m and 200m

Canada’s Andre De Grasse showcased his speed and consistency by winning both the men’s 100 meters and 200 meters. In the 100 meters, he defeated Italy’s Marcell Jacobs with a time of 10.10 seconds, while Jacobs finished third at 10.19 seconds. Ryiem Forde of Jamaica secured second place with a time of 10.17 seconds. De Grasse returned to win the 200 meters in 20.09 seconds, ahead of Andrew Hudson, who finished in 20.56 seconds, and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake of Great Britain, who clocked 20.63 seconds.

Men’s 400m

Olympic champion Steven Gardiner from the Bahamas continued his dominance in the 400 meters, winning with a time of 44.39 seconds. The world indoor champion, Belgium’s Alexander Doom, finished a close second with 44.44 seconds, and Sean Bailey of Jamaica took third place with a time of 44.93 seconds.

Women’s 100m

Poland’s Ewa Swoboda triumphed in the Women’s 100 meters with a time of 11.05 seconds in her season debut. Gina Bass Bittaye from Gambia secured second place with 11.14 seconds, while Zaynab Dosso of Italy finished third in 11.18 seconds. Swiss champion Mujinga Kambundji came fourth, clocking 11.27 seconds.

Women’s 400m

Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek dominated the Women’s 400 meters, winning in 50.09 seconds. Local Czech athlete, 18-year-old Lurdes Gloria Manuel, secured second place with a personal best of 50.59 seconds, and Andrea MiklĂłs of Romania finished third with a time of 50.76 seconds.

Women’s 100m Hurdles

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji narrowly edged out Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska in the Women’s 100 meters hurdles, winning with a time of 12.68 seconds. Kambundji triumphed by just 0.03 seconds over the world indoor bronze medalist, while Dutch champion Nadine Visser finished third with a time of 12.86 seconds.
