Athletics: Tara Davis-Woodhall wins women’s long jump gold
We’re coming down to the final jumps in the women’s long jump final.
USA’s Tara Davis-Woodhall leads with a big 7.10m fourth attempt, while defending champion Malaika Mihambo of Germany is currently second on 6.98m. Davis-Woodhall’s teammate Jasmine Moore sits third.
Four women left to jump. First up is Italy’s Larissa Iapichino, who needs 6.96 to move into the medals. It’s 6.85 and won’t move her up, so we have our medallists.
Moore, who has already won bronze in the triple jump, can’t improve either – so she will add long jump bronze to her collection.
What can the defending champion do? This has to be big. But she runs through the pit! Tara Davis-Woodhall is the Olympic champion.
Mihambo thanks the crowd and will leave with silver.
Davis-Woodhall takes her final jump and won’t improve either but no matter. She turns to face the crowd, then falls backwards into the pit in celebration.
In the stands, her husband and U.S. Paralympian Hunter Woodhall is celebrating.
