Bol Leads Netherlands to Thrilling 4x400m Relay Gold at Roma 2024

Femke Bol capped off a remarkable European Athletics Championships by securing her second gold and third medal of the event, anchoring the Netherlands to a thrilling victory in the women’s 4x400m relay. The race, highly anticipated and tightly contested, saw the Dutch team fend off a strong challenge from Ireland.

Ireland’s hopes were high after impressive performances by their first three runners—Sophie Becker, individual silver medallist Rhasidat Adeleke, and Phil Healy. Adeleke handed over a narrow one-meter lead to Healy, who ran valiantly before passing the baton to Sharlene Mawdsley. Mawdsley started her leg five meters ahead of Bol, who was expected to close the gap swiftly.

Contrary to expectations, Bol did not immediately pull away. Mawdsley, rejuvenated from her individual disappointments, pushed hard, creating a thrilling contest. However, Bol’s strength and experience ultimately prevailed as she crossed the finish line in 3:22.39, marking the fastest European time of the season. Bol’s split was an impressive 50.45 seconds.

“I think I am falling in love even more with Italy after this Championship,” said Bol. “I wanted to give all my own for our team and we took this amazing victory. I feel a lot of enthusiasm: my teammates did a great job and I made sure to complete their job.”

Mawdsley’s outstanding effort, with a split time of 49.84 seconds, earned Ireland the silver medal and set a new Irish record with a time of 3:22.71. This achievement marked the first time Ireland had won four medals at a European Athletics Championships.
