Golf: World no. 1 Scheffler wins gold!

So Tommy Fleetwood needs birdie to force a playoff for gold. Behind him, Jon Rahm (ESP) needs birdie to force a playoff with Matsuyama Hideki (JPN) for bronze. Matsuyama is already in the clubhouse, a shot behind Fleetwood.

Does Scheffler have gold in the bag? Fleetwood on the par-four 18th sends his second long and left of the green! It doesn’t look good for the Brit…

Rahm finds the green with his second, but a long way from the pin.

The final group get a huge cheer as they walk up to the 18th green.

Fleetwood can’t sink the chip so it will not be gold for him. Scheffler gets the news and has a wide grin on his face.

Rahm misses his long putt for bronze, then misses his par putt to end up with six dropped shots on the back nine. That’s what ended his medal hopes. The Spaniard looks devastated.

So the Brit Fleetwood has a short putt to guarantee silver. Miss this, and he faces a playoff…

He sinks it! A smile on his face, it’s not quite gold, but it is an Olympic medal.

🥇 Scottie Scheffler (USA) -19

🥈 Tommy Fleetwood (GBR) -18

🥉 Matsuyama Hideki (JPN) -17
