Ingebrigtsen Triumphs Again, Retains 5000m Title at Roma 2024

Jakob Ingebrigtsen showcased his prowess by securing his fifth gold medal at the European Athletics Championships in Roma 2024, marking the first step towards another potential 1500m/5000m double.

The 5000m race, considered more challenging, was Ingebrigtsen’s first attempt at the distance since his gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year. Starting cautiously at the back, he moved to the front by halfway, staying in touch with leaders like Spain’s Adel Mechaal and Britain’s George Mills.

In the final lap, Ingebrigtsen surged ahead, reminiscent of past World Championships where he was overtaken by British runners. This time, however, he maintained his lead, completing a 54.14 final lap to win the title in 13:20.11. Mills earned silver with a time of 13:21.38, and Switzerland’s Dominic Lokinyomo Lobalu claimed bronze in 13:21.61.
