Judo: Teddy Riner wins gold in men’s +100kg

This is the one all of France has been waiting for: the men’s +100kg judo final, with Teddy Riner involved.

He faces world number one Kim Minjong of Republic of Korea.

Even at the media centre at the La Défense Arena ahead of tonight’s swimming action, journalists have crowded around TV screens to watch Riner.

The noise at the Champ-de-Mars Arena is deafening. Kim will have to overcome that in addition to Riner.

An attempted takedown, but that doesn’t go anywhere. Then a lot of grappling as the two try to get the better of each other. They just about step out of bounds and the referee resets them into the centre of the mat.

HE DOES IT!

What a move with his feet! Teddy Riner gets the ippon (harai-goshi) and the crowd goes wild! He raises his arm in the air and has a huge grin on his face.

Teddy Riner has won gold on home soil. He goes in to hug Kim as the bow each other, then raises his opponent’s arm in the air, before jumping up and down in celebration.

He falls to his knees as he takes in the adoration of the crowd.

Riner becomes the first judoka with four Olympic golds to his name (three individual, one team), and becomes the most decorated athlete in his sport with six Olympic medals. He could add another tomorrow in the mixed team event.

Earlier, Tajikistan’s Temur Rakhimov and Alisher Yusupov of Uzbekistan claimed bronze.
