The Belgian two-time Olympic heptathlon champion is in a strong position to add a third consecutive gold after throwing a mammoth 54.04m in the javelin to easily take maximum points.

She has a 121 point lead over Johnson-Thompson heading into the final event: the 800m. That means the Briton will need to finish around eight seconds faster than Thiam to claim the gold.
