Swimming: WR holder Sarah Sjöström wins first Olympic title in 100m free

Straight over to Paris La Défense Arena, where the women’s 100m freestyle final gets us underway in the pool with no fewer than five finals this evening.

World record holder Sarah Sjöström of Sweden is in lane seven. The Olympic record holder and defending champion Emma McKeon is not here. The top qualifier is Siobhán Haughey of Hong Kong, China, the current world champion.

Off and into the water. Sjöström is quick into the pool but it’s Torri Huske in the outside lane one who leads into 50 just ahead of Haughey!

In the outside lane, can Huske pull this off? Here comes Haughey! And Sjöström!

It’s Sarah Sjöström! What a remarkable finish! Her first Olympic title in this event, even as the world record holder! She lets out a huge scream in the pool. She is delighted.

This is the one that means most to her. She is sobbing her eyes out. What a champion.

  1. Sarah Sjöström (SWE) 52.16
  2. Torri Huske (USA) 52.29
  3. Siobhán Haughey (HKG) 52.33
