Swimming: Pan Zhanle breaks world record to win men’s 100m free

Time for the evening’s last final, the men’s 100m freestyle. Some big names in this, including former world record holder David Popovici, who’s already won the 200; Pan Zhanle, the current world record holder, and Australia’s Kyle Chalmers.

France have Maxime Grousset in lane six, garnering massive cheers.

In they go! The noise is massive! Pan has started quickly. Grousset is up there too. Pan turns in the lead.

Chalmers is trying to push through now but Pan is clear at the front!

Nearly a full body length now!

Pan Zhanle wins in a new world record time! 46.40, lowering it by a full four tenths!

Chalmers takes silver in 47.48, Popovici bronze in 47.49. Hungary’s Nandor Nemeth was only a further hundredth behind.

That’s the first world record to fall in the pool in Paris.
